Crochet Pineapple Market Bag – Free Pattern

While scrolling through Pinterest for fun crochet patterns, I came across a post from Ambrosia’s Creations for a really pretty market bag pattern with the pineapple motif that is very common in doilies and tablecloths, but I had never seen it on a bag.
The pineapple motif is one of my very favorites, especially since I have been a little obsessed with crocheting doilies and tablecloths. The pineapple is very simple to crochet, but makes a big statement, and it lays flat without stretching or starching (unlike some other doily motifs). Doily image from: karlasmakingit.com
I have crocheted many other market bags, but what I did not like about them is that they were not very cute, and they stretched too much. If I tried to put anything heavy in them, the handles and bag stretched so far that the bag was practically dragging on the floor.
This pineapple market bag pattern seemed to solve both of those problems for me, so I found some pretty silver/gray yarn that I bought from the thrift shop for 50 cents, and found my Size F crochet hook, and got to work.
The bottom of the bag was exactly like some of the doily patterns I have worked before, and the only stitches needed in the whole pattern are: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, and double crochet.
This pattern would be absolutely doable for someone with moderate experience crocheting.
I really enjoyed making this bag, and it took me about 3-4 hours to complete it.
This pattern is great because the bottom of the bag is very sturdy and filled-in (so small items would not fall out the bottom), and the sides stretch to fit larger items, but do not stretch too far that the bag hangs low while carrying heavy things.
I added some cute multicolored glass beads to the top for a little added fun and color.
I don’t like bag patterns that have separate handles that you have to crochet and then sew on later, and even though this pattern is not like that, there is still some fastening-off and rejoining of the yarn for the handles, so I altered the pattern with my favorite crochet bag handles that I have figured out how to create from making many other bags and handled baskets.
The pattern below is borrowed from Ambrosia’s Creations, and I edited it to reflect the changes that I made to the pattern.
